2026 Ram 1500 vs Ram 2500: Which Ram Truck Should You Choose?

Both the 2026 RAM 1500 and the 2026 RAM 2500 are built to work hard. But they’re designed for different lives. Whether you’re hauling gear or handling heavy commercial loads, choosing the right RAM starts with knowing what each truck was built to do.
Choose the RAM 1500 if your towing needs are moderate and you want the best ride comfort and interior tech in a half-ton. The RAM 2500 is for hauling heavy loads, commercial-grade payloads, or pulling a fifth-wheel rig.
Either way, we carry both and know them well. Here’s the breakdown.
Capability: Towing and Payload
The 1500 is a light-duty half-ton built for families and moderate hauling. The 2500 is a heavy-duty three-quarter-ton built for serious work.
| 2026 RAM 1500 | 2026 RAM 2500 | |
| Max Towing | Up to 11,610 lb* | Up to 20,000 lb* |
| Max Payload | Up to 2,360 lb* | Up to 4,580 lb* |
*When properly equipped.
The 1500 handles boats, campers, and utility trailers with ease. Its class-exclusive coil-spring rear suspension also delivers a smoother, more car-like ride day to day. For drivers who tow on weekends but commute daily, it’s the more comfortable choice.
The 2500 is in a different category. At up to 20,000 lb of towing and 4,580 lb of payload, it’s built for fifth-wheel rigs, heavy equipment, and commercial hauling. See our new RAM 2500 in Dade City to explore available configurations.
Engines and Performance
The 1500 offers four powertrains ranging from an efficient V6 to a 540-horsepower Hurricane. Conversely, the 2026 RAM 2500 starts stronger at the base and adds a diesel option that produces significantly more torque.
2026 RAM 1500 Engine Options
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque |
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 w/ eTorque | 305 hp | 269 lb-ft |
| 5.7L HEMI V8 w/ eTorque | 395 hp | 410 lb-ft |
| 3.0L Hurricane I6 Twin Turbo (SO) | 420 hp | 469 lb-ft |
| 3.0L Hurricane I6 Twin Turbo (HO) | 540 hp | 521 lb-ft |
2026 RAM 2500 Engine Options
| Engine | Horsepower | Torque |
| 6.4L HEMI V8 (standard) | 405 hp | 429 lb-ft |
| 6.7L Cummins HO Turbo Diesel I6 (available) | 430 hp | 1,075 lb-ft |
The 1500’s Hurricane High Output is an incredibly powerful engine available for a half-ton pickup, and the returning HEMI V8 brings back the character buyers asked for. Browse our new RAM 1500 for sale in Dade City to find the right powertrain for your needs.
The 2500 is not EPA-rated, as federal guidelines don’t require it for heavy-duty trucks, but the available Cummins base diesel’s 1,075 lb-ft of torque is what gives it its 20,000 lb towing capability.
Interior, Technology, and Comfort
Both trucks come standard with Uconnect 5, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
The 2026 RAM 1500 pushes deep into luxury at upper trims. Available features include a 14.5-inch touchscreen and a class-exclusive 10.25-inch front passenger screen, dual wireless charging pads, and a 23-speaker Klipsch audio system on the Tungsten.
The 2500 matches the 1500’s tech stack across most trims and adds work-focused extras. The 2500 includes a standard Electronic Trailer Brake Controller from the Big Horn trim level upward, and the available 2.4kW onboard power inverter turns your truck into a mobile power source on the job site. The Mega Cab configuration adds generous rear legroom with available reclining rear seats for long-haul comfort.
Safety Features
Both trucks come standard with:
- Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop
- Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus with Auto Emergency Braking
- Pedestrian/Cyclist Emergency Braking
- Electronic Stability Control
- ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera
Blind Spot Monitoring is standard across all 2026 RAM 1500 trims. On the 2500, it is standard from the Laramie trim up and available as a package option on lower trims. Additional driver-assist features, including Lane Departure Warning and Drowsy Driver Detection, are available on both trucks through higher trim levels and option packages.
Trim Levels
The 1500 offers 10 trims in 2026, from the work-ready Tradesman up through the near-luxury Tungsten, with off-road options like the Rebel and RHO in between. The 2500 offers 9 trims, including two new additions: the blacked-out Black Express and the off-road-ready Warlock. Both lineups run from bare-bones work trucks to premium cabins.
